Trump extends TikTok’s deadline to 90 days
President Trump has signed a new executive order extending the deadline by which ByteDance must either sell or spin off its TikTok business in the US to 90 days, rather than the original 45. While the new deadline of November 12th must be a relief for the company, this latest executive order also requires ByteDance to destroy any TikTok (and Musical.ly) data from US users, and report to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States once this has been done.

Facebook adds support for paid online events
Facebook is launching a new events feature that will allow Page owners and event organisers to create paid online events, with the overall goal of helping “small businesses and those in the entertainment and live event space try to start earning money again.” According to Facebook, 20 countries around the world – including the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France and Australia – can now start charging for online events.



Twitter rolls out its API v2
Twitter has officially released its API v2, a major overhaul to the social network’s application-programming interface, which was first announced back in July. The social network has said the completely new foundation behind API v2 will enable it to add new functionality quicker and more efficiently and will give developers a cleaner API that is easier to use. All developers will now have the same options for multiple access levels and the ability to grow on the same API.

Twitter lets users limit Replies
Following a brief beta test, Twitter has confirmed that it will be rolling out its new feature allowing users to limit who can reply to their tweets. Once updated, users will see a small globe icon at the bottom of their tweet, which is the default setting – allowing anyone to reply. However, if a user taps on the icon users will have the option to limit replies to either those who follow them, or just to those who have been tagged in the tweet itself.

LinkedIn sells SlideShare
LinkedIn has confirmed that it has sold its presentation-sharing service, SlideShare (originally bought for $118.75 million in May 2012) to ebook and audiobook platform Scribd, for an undisclosed price. Scribd will begin operating SlideShare September 24th and will add over 40 million presentations to that ecosystem.

Pinterest expands skin tone range for Try-On feature
Pinterest has updated its augmented reality Try-On feature to provide users with a range of beauty and fashion products that match their skin tone. According to the platform, it introduced skin tone ranges because nearly 60 per cent of searches involving ‘skin’ included a specific tone, such as dark, olive or pale. As part of the expansion, Pinterest is also adding NARS, Clé de Peau and Thrive Causemetics to its list of brands who can use the feature.



Ones to watch
Facebook has created a new group to handle opportunities in payments and commerce, Facebook Financial; secure messaging app, Telegram has launched an alpha version of a one-on-one video calls feature on both its Android and iOS apps; and smaller TikTok rival, Likee has amassed 150 million monthly active users.
